Bruce Lee's Temple Of Kung Fu x Mad Toy Design

Round 5 announces exclusive collaboration with art toy design legend Jeremy Madl, aka MAD, on its first ever release of Round 5 X Bruce Lee X MAD figures and the debut of Bruce Lee's Temple of Kung Fu line of collectibles.

The Temple of Kung Fu launch represents the first of several planned collaborations between Round 5 and established artists from the art toy space centering on the official Bruce Lee brand.

"There are so many different things to celebrate about Bruce Lee, the martial artist, the philosopher, the actor, but here we are just celebrating Bruce Lee - the legend," said Damon Lau, President of Round 5. "Working with MAD on a brand like Bruce Lee has been incredible, his passion for the brand is so evident in the design of this collection, which is amongst the best we've ever created."

The first Temple of Kung Fu figures scheduled for global release this summer will feature a 3-inch blind box assortment of 28 characters including a variety of mystery characters, and will be available at select retailers around the world. In addition to the standard figures, Temple of Kung Fu will include hyper-limited chase figures featuring alternative colorways, costume designs, and accessories.

The Temple of Kung Fu will feature a broad variety of figures inspired by the legend and career of Bruce Lee, and those of Kung Fu history and lore.

MAD, best known for his collaborations with Kidrobot, is eager to be working on the Bruce Lee brand. "I've been a fan of Bruce Lee since watching his movies as a kid, and he's become such an icon I jumped at the opportunity to create this line," said MAD. "I think everyone will be blown away by our first release."

The Crow: A Tribute To The Underappreciated Genius Of Brandon Lee

As a child born towards the end of the 80s I spent my more formative years influenced by my parents’ film collection. Absorbed in the fantasy worlds of Robin Hood, the man with no name, Batman and Bruce Lee movies, my heroes were vigilantes, gun slingers and Kung fu experts. Often to the dismay of my teachers and most likely illustrated in my childhood games, Bruce Lee, a man introduced to me by Dad was one of my first proper heroes. Raised upon the likes of Enter and Way Of The Dragon I was one of the few kids in the playground that would cite the latter’s end fight with Chuck Norris as his favourite movie scene over the theatrical ending of Aladdin or the fiery climax of The Jungle Book. It seemed only fitting then that at an early age I would also stumble across Bruce lee’s tragic son Brandon whilst sifting through the post-divorce collection of VHS’ that I’d inherited as an ill defined youngster. Being drawn in particular to one movie in question – The Crow.

This was a film my Dad had spoken to me about at length so even before my first viewing I felt well braced in the tales of the movies cult standing, its groundbreakingly accurate take on the graphic novel and the unavoidable tragic death of Brandon Lee through a firearm accident whilst shooting.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by James O’Barr, it tells the story of Eric Draven. A man wrongfully murdered, who returns from the brink of the afterlife in order to reap vengeance on those that took his life. It’s a text book fantasy tale, one that even as a child barely a teenager, I remember thinking slightly clichéd. Albeit with little understanding of what a cliché actually was. That didn’t however take away from the mystique or potential of viewing such a film. Especially when it was a film that previously I’d been told to completely avoid until I was older – an instruction I obviously avoided one dreary summer holiday weekday.

Redlander featured in Bruce Lee project

Back in the mid-1970s Teri Tom was still figuring her life out.

Then Tom stumbled upon a Bruce Lee documentary.

That moment changed everything for her.

Tom, who grew up in Redlands, is today considered to be one of the world's most knowledgeable instructors on Bruce Lee's art - Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do.

Tom has written three novels related to Bruce Lee's career and art. She is a former member of the original Bruce Lee Foundation.

Tom also is a former student of Ted Wong - Bruce Lee's private teacher.

The Redlands High School graduate will be among a select few to be featured in the latest Bruce Lee project. A special viewing of "I am Bruce Lee" will be held at Krikorian Premiere Theatres in Redlands, on Thursday and on Feb. 15. Both viewings begin at 7:30 p.m.

Tom will be featured alongside the likes of UFC president Dana White, who referred to Bruce Lee as the "Father of Martial Arts;" NBA superstar Kobe Bryant and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.

Bruce Lee's daughter Shannon Lee, serves as executive producer.

Tom, whose parents Wesley and Janice reside in Redlands, was initially hesitant to take part in the project. There has been legitimate work done on Bruce Lee, but there have been more projects that did nothing but exploit his fame.

"It's painful," Tom said of the assortment of questionable documentaries, movies and other projects that took his name.

"I don't really need to reach everyone," Tom said. "I just want people to realize that there is an alternative to what has been presented as Bruce Lee's art over the last few years. I'm very honored to be asked to be a part of this."

Tom hasn't seen the documentary yet. But Pete McCormack, director of "I am Bruce Lee," had this to say about her contribution.

"... Honest, sometimes provocative; balanced, kind, all good and appreciated," Tom read from a note from McCormack.

Shannon Lee had this to say about the project, "My family and I are so proud of this film, which truly portrays the legacy of my father and his incredible story."
